my thoughts on ethel cain

so i recently discovered ethel cain around november 2023. i don't remember how, but her song 'knuckle velvet' really stood out to me and became one of my favourite songs that month. i didn't find myself listening to her discography until this month, and WOW does the album make me feel sick (if you know you know).
i don't come across many artists that tell a story throughout their entire album, but ethel cain does. listening to her made me want to look for more concept albums out there. i'll update if i find any that i enjoy.
ethel cain's story isn't about the artist herself, but a character she portrays - a preacher's daughter who grows up in an abusive, unsupportive home, yearning for a life outside of the bubble she feels forced in. her loss of faith gets stronger as she gets older, when her father's expectations of upholding the church become stricter. she sings about secret previous lovers, and the particular abuse she went through with her final one, who ends up killing her. the album stops singing shortly after her life ends.
this album features a lot of triggering material - abuse, murder, grooming, violence, and cannibalism. listening and analyzing this is not for the faint of heart, and it was definitely a lot to process. for me and many others, that is what makes this album so great. it provides a rather gruesome look into the involvements of religion in one's life, especially for those with religious trauma. i find that many fans online enjoy her music because of the relatability aspect. hayden (the artist) has a talent for the most beautifully written lyrics.
